{"id":6383,"date":"2014-12-24T06:42:18","date_gmt":"2014-12-24T11:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp\/?p=6383"},"modified":"2018-09-19T09:26:35","modified_gmt":"2018-09-19T13:26:35","slug":"christmas-crash-reading-day-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/christmas-crash-reading-day-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas Crash Reading &#8211; Day 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday.\u00a0 Today we wrote our first <a href=\"http:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/tools-for-struggling-readers\/writing\/\">hamburger essay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We had previously worked through some spoken essays &#8211; explaining the concept and trying some examples aloud.\u00a0 I had marked up essays in the New York Times to show how they followed the hamburger-essay pattern.\u00a0 Today I handed H. a pen and told him to write one.<\/p>\n<p>To get things started, I asked &#8216;What did you do yesterday?&#8217; and he responded &#8216;Nothing.&#8217;, so he is clearly well adjusted in his role as a teenager.\u00a0 But we agreed that he had done a few things, and he would write an essay about yesterday&#8217;s training.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/localhost\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/firsthamburger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6394 \" src=\"http:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/firsthamburger-300x295.jpg\" alt=\"firsthamburger\" width=\"217\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/firsthamburger-300x295.jpg 300w, https:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/firsthamburger-100x98.jpg 100w, https:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/firsthamburger-150x148.jpg 150w, https:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/firsthamburger-200x197.jpg 200w, https:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/firsthamburger.jpg 396w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a>We picked a title and underlined it, we worked back and forth on the opening paragraph, the three content paragraphs, and the summation.\u00a0 I made suggestions and called out the spelling.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not impressive, but this may be the longest, and best organized piece of writing he has produced.\u00a0 Not quite a grade-8 essay yet, but he will improve quickly with practice.<\/p>\n<p>We powered through the Blending drills, we have now started the fifth short vowel \/eh\/ and are contrasting it with the earlier ones.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/localhost\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-6395 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sign.jpg\" alt=\"sign\" width=\"217\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sign.jpg 217w, https:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sign-100x78.jpg 100w, https:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sign-150x118.jpg 150w, https:\/\/communityreading.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sign-200x157.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a>We talked about how words change their sounds but the spelling gives a hint to their meaning.\u00a0 For example, &#8216;design&#8217; sounds like it should be spelled &#8216;de\/zyne&#8217;, and &#8216;signal&#8217; doesn&#8217;t sound at all like &#8216;sign&#8217;, but they have the same spelling to show their shared meaning and origin.<\/p>\n<p>And we read.\u00a0 We covered about 40 pages of Goosebumps in two sessions.\u00a0 I pointed out the construction of some tricky words, and checked in on his comprehension every few paragraphs, but mostly we just read and enjoyed the story together.<\/p>\n<p>The hardest trick with fingerpoint reading is to help with the hard words your student needs to understand the story, but not offer them so fast that he doesn&#8217;t get to try them himself.\u00a0 I&#8217;m starting to get the rhythm of reading with H., when he decodes a hard word I congratulate him with a gesture that doesn&#8217;t interrupt his reading, when he struggles I try to give him a partial hint or a partial correction, and when he gets one wrong I say the correct one without stopping him.\u00a0 If a sentence was rough, I&#8217;ll re-read it at the end for him to make sure he understands it.<\/p>\n<p>This Goosebumps is a great story.\u00a0 We are both enjoying it.\u00a0 And it is sweeter because we both see the obvious progress that H. is making.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday.\u00a0 Today we wrote our first hamburger essay.
