If you have a niggling feeling that all might not be well with your child’s schooling, use this easy tool to check whether or not your child is working at grade level.

If you already know that your child is several grades behind in reading, then don’t bother with this assessment.  Move directly to the ‘Blending’ program and start training, you will quickly know whether it is required.

This tool will assess your child’s skills in:

  • Phonological Awareness
  • Blending / Segmenting
  • Phonics
  • Sight words
  • Latin/Greek roots and affixes
  • Comprehension

It is not a replacement for a professional assessment, but it will walk you through the key elements of reading and give you an idea of what your child can actually do.

Remember that ‘Reading’ and ‘Spelling’ are not independent skills. Children with terrible spelling often are missing the critical skills of segmenting and blending, they can’t figure out the sounds in a word. Less awful spelling often means that the child needs to learn phonics. Plausible but ‘non-traditional’ spelling often indicates a lack of understanding of affixes and perhaps a lack of reading practice.
